What makes a good LNAT resource?

When evaluating the best LNAT books 2026 and other resources, the most important question is whether the material reflects the real difficulty and format of the exam. The LNAT is a specific, distinctive test. Generic critical thinking or reading comprehension materials are of limited value because they do not replicate the particular question types, passage style and answer construction of the real exam.

Good LNAT resources have passages of similar length and complexity to real LNAT passages, question types that mirror the actual exam, answer choices that are genuinely close together (not obviously right or wrong), and worked explanations that teach you the reasoning behind each answer.

Official LNAT resources

The LNAT website (lnat.ac.uk)

The official LNAT website provides two practice papers which are free and essential. They are the most accurate representation of the format, question phrasing and timing of the real exam. Every student should complete both official papers as part of their preparation.

However, these two papers have a significant limitation: they are widely considered to be easier than the real exam. They are an essential starting point but not sufficient preparation on their own if you are targeting a competitive university.

LNAT books

The Ultimate LNAT Guide (Rohan Agarwal)

This is one of the most widely used LNAT preparation books. It covers both sections of the exam with explanations of question types, worked examples and practice questions. The content quality is generally good and the explanations are clear. It is a useful supplement to practice papers, particularly for understanding the logic behind different question types.

LNAT preparation guides from UniAdmissions and similar providers

Several admissions preparation companies publish LNAT guides. Quality varies considerably. The best ones offer genuine practice questions with detailed explanations. The weaker ones offer generic advice and questions that do not closely reflect the real exam. Read reviews from recent applicants before purchasing.

Online resources

The Student Room (TSR)

TSR has extensive LNAT discussion threads where past applicants share experiences, score reports and preparation advice. This is genuinely useful for understanding what the real exam is like from student perspectives. Search for “LNAT 2025” or “LNAT 2026” threads to find the most recent discussions.

YouTube preparation videos

Several tutors and preparation companies have posted LNAT technique videos on YouTube. Quality varies widely. Videos that walk through specific question types with worked examples are more useful than general advice videos. Look for content that actually shows you how to approach a passage and specific question types step by step.

Full-length practice papers: the most important resource

Whatever books or guides you use, the most important resource for LNAT preparation is full-length practice papers taken under timed conditions. No book or video can replace the experience of sitting a complete 95-minute Section A followed by a 40-minute Section B – this is the specific stamina and pacing challenge the real exam requires.

The two official papers are not enough volume for most students to see significant improvement. Additional practice papers that match real exam difficulty are essential, particularly for students targeting Oxford, UCL or Durham.

Our free LNAT practice paper gives you a starting point at no cost, and our full-length LNAT practice tests provide the volume of quality practice needed to build a genuinely competitive score.

What is not worth your time

Generic critical thinking textbooks designed for other purposes (business, psychology, A-Level) are of limited value for LNAT preparation. The question types and answer construction in these materials do not closely reflect the LNAT. LSAT preparation materials (the US law school admission test) are also sometimes suggested, but the LSAT and LNAT are significantly different tests – LSAT preparation is not a good substitute for LNAT-specific materials.
